RACE RECAP | Tuesday Night Crit – Week Two

The Tuesday Night Crit was a coming out party for the Cadence 4/5 race team with 11 teammates lining up for the 5:45 PM start. It’s always nice hearing competitors say, “Damn, Cadence showed up tonight” when you roll to the starting line. You know the saying, “Everyone has a plan, until you get punched in the throat.” Well, Cadence went in to the race with a plan and an understanding of what roles each person was willing to play based on early season fitness. Their main goal was to make sure no break was established unless they were in...

2016 Tour of Southland (Stage 5-7)

Stage 5 – The Rain!     Tour of Southland prides itself as a tough event.  Not just in terrain or world class riders, but mostly in terrible weather conditions.  We knew bad weather was just part of coming to Southland.  We had the right gear and were mentally prepared, but when it finally hits, it hurts. The race started with a relative calm. Legs among the peloton were feeling the previous 4 stages.  A large breakaway rolled up the road and the Yellow Jersey team tried to maintain tempo to tame the peloton. Only after 30 minutes into the...

2016 Tour of Southland (Stage 2-4)

Stage 2 – Te Anau     One hard lesson we learned from Stage 1 was that the roads were very rough.  Fortunately, the roads didn’t have many potholes however the chip seal rocks were large and made for a rough ride, leaving us with aching hips and joints. I ran 90 psi, but decided to dial it back to 85 psi for Stage 2.  85 psi seemed to be the sweet spot and the pain went away.  Stage 2 required a 35-minute drive in the morning to a seaside town.  The 10am neutral start was about 4k long and...

2016 Tour of Southland (Prologue & Stage 1)

After 25 hours of travel time and a couple of days to acclimate and decompress in Hamilton NZ (about 90 minute drive from Auckland) we landed in Queenstown.  This town is famous for its beauty as a mountain town, ski resort, boating and general tourist destination.  It’s also the finish location of Stage 3 atop of Cornet Peak. Our drive from Queenstown lead us further south towards Invercargill, the main hub location and starting point for the Tour of Southland stage race.  Along the way to Invercargill we travel in a van with our gear and bikes down a narrow...

Cadence Cyclery Labor Day Ride a Success!

Labor Day 2016

This year's Labor Day Ride took off from our Highland Village location, and it was bigger and better, to say the least! Thanks to the tireless efforts of staff and volunteers, we were able to host well over 200 riders on three different routes! Riders were taken care of front start to finish, with the shop opening beforehand for last minute adjustments, to full SAG throughout the rides, and finishing off with food and beverages provided by our sponsor Tupp's Brewery. Team riders and new faces alike all had a great time, and this will definitely be a tradition that...
